Prior to joining Kelvin Chia Yangon Ltd. in 1998, U Than Maung was a Law Officer cum Public Attorney with the Attorney General’s Office of the Union of Myanmar. His almost 16 years of practice in the public sector has afforded him invaluable experience as a litigator, and he has represented the state in both civil and criminal cases. In the course of his work with the Attorney General’s Office, U Than Maung further drafted and translated laws and other legal instruments from the Myanmar language to English and vice versa, vetted numerous commercial contracts between the state and private entities, and rendered legal opinions to ministries in respect of international conventions and agreements.
In his nine years of practice as an associate of Kelvin Chia Yangon Ltd., U Than Maung has undertaken many intellectual property and trademark registration matters, and provided advice for a range of investment and commercial transactions. Proficiently bi-lingual in the Myanmar language and English, he works with various local and foreign companies, and liaises with government authorities and regulatory bodies.
Apart from his work with Kelvin Chia Yangon Ltd., U Than Maung contributes regularly to the Law Journal and the Judicial Journal, biannual publications of the Attorney General’s office and the Supreme Court, respectively, as well as other periodicals, such as the "World Economic and Intellectual Property Journal", the "Commerce Journal of the Ministry of Commerce", and the "Business Journal of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI)", among others. In addition, he conducts legal and business seminars, the most recent of which was broadcasted on the state-owned MRTV 4 where he discussed intellectual property and trademark related issues.
His extensive knowledge and experience in the realm of intellectual property have culminated in the publication of his first book entitled, "Legal Articles on Intellectual Property Rights", as well as an exclusive invitation to provide legal consultancy services to the government of the Union of Myanmar for the drafting of new intellectual property laws.
